EV Charger Installation: What to Expect
The world of EV Charger installations, and electric vehicles as a whole, is still unfamiliar territory to so many people. It doesn’t matter if you are considering a workplace installation or a domestic install of a charging point, the long and short of it is many people are still unsure of options.
We recently published a post on the benefits of electric car charging at home and we’ve also considered the financial benefits of workplace charging. This post is for those on the next step. You know you’re ready for an install, but what does it look like? And who should carry that out?
This guide will talk you through the process and what you can expect at each step of the journey.
Your EV Charger Installation
You might wonder what your home or workplace will look like following installation. Don’t worry, it’s not all that different to what it looks like now.
While you may have futuristic visions of a transformed parking bay or garage, the fact is your home charging point is a small box adjoined to your wall. This charging point is smaller than your standard electric meter that you expect to see on any home.
If this EV charger installation is at your business, the same can be said if just one install, though depending on the size of your business, your staff or the number of fleet vehicles you have, you may be having any number of units installed.
If this is the case, you may have a row of charging points installed or you may have a number dotted around your premise. Each instance is unique.

Site Survey
The first thing you can expect is a site visit from a member of our team. This is a short visit to understand the layout of your property if there are any restrictions that need to be considered and to go over the final details.
We’ll take some pictures, and plan the work to be undertaken.
Prior to installation
There is very little for you to do before your charging point is installed apart from deciding on the unit. Of course, we will help you to select the right model for you. The beauty of working with Go Electric is we are independent of any of the manufacturers. We only install what is right for each specific job.
We’ll also advise you on the best position for the charging point. Again, this can vary depending on whether the install in internal or external of the property, your current power supply and parking preferences.
Leave everything else to us. 30 days before installation, we’ll inform your supply network and we’ll ensure we have everything ready ahead of the install.
During installation
Your install will take anything from a morning to a full day. There are times when installing a charging point can take longer but if that is going to be the case, we’ll discuss that with you before the job is confirmed.
A small dedicated fuse board can be fitted during your install and for maximum safety, we fit residual current devices (RCDs) between the main fuse board and charge point, and between charge point and vehicle.
Your charging point is fitted by an OLEV (Office for Low Emission Vehicles) installer and all groundworks, wiring and installed is checked over thoroughly before being signed off.
Now comes the fun part.
We’ll show you how you can work your new charging system including the app to use so that you can keep an eye on your vehicle charging information. Even the biggest technophobes are amazed at how simple it is to use and understand.
